This homestead was long overdue for a comprehensive refresh of nearly all its original plantings across over 13,000 square feet of beds. The initial design was overplanted, leading to both aesthetic and maintenance challenges. The client requested low-maintenance, deer-resistant plantings with a focus on late spring and summer seasonal interest.

The property presented diverse conditions, including full sun, partial shade, and areas with wet, clay soil. Erik developed a refined, simplified planting palette that complemented the home and was designed to mature at an appropriate scale. He incorporated many of his favorite deer-resistant varieties, such as Duke Gardens Plum Yews, Allium, Caryopteris, Zagreb Coreopsis, Nepeta, and Dwarf Hameln Grass, to provide color and texture. In the clay and wet soil areas, Brandywine Viburnum, Red Twig Dogwood, and evergreen Burning Love Leucothoe were planted to add seasonal interest.

The client was thrilled with the transformation and has rediscovered a love for spending time outdoors. Erik was immediately asked to continue updating other areas of the property, with more exciting changes planned for 2025!
